Back in 1963 my clarinet teacher, Jack Rattery, observed that I was
breathing from my chest and shoulders. He "communicated" the proper
technique by having me lie on the floor and then sitting his fully
developed bottom on my [then] tiny teenaged tummy. He then commanded me
to lift him as high as I could with said tummy. He told me that those were
the right muscles to use. It worked.

I suppose such pedagogy is now verboten. It's a pitty 'cause as I said, it
worked.
