But, Bill, the fact is that many instrumentalists did move around, and quite
a bit. The top quality players were in demand all over and they toured
Europe for fame and fortune (Mozart for example toured England, Italy,
France, many of the German states, and a good deal of the Holy Roman Empire,
and he was just one of many). The pitch problem did matter and was a pain in
the butt for all but the most provincial musicians.

much, and the instrument maker was a craftsman in your own town, the pitch
standard COULD vary from town to town and wouldn't matter for most purposes.
