Today's (9 Mar 99, page 3C) Dayton (Ohio) Daily News carried an article
by Charlotte Huff of the Fort Worth Star Telegram, titled "Mechanics of
music key pain."

"It all starts with the thumb."

"Years of devotion to the clarinet can weigh heavily on the digit,
sometimes triggering pain up through the wrist and hand to the shoulder
and neck."

"Researchers are searching for 60 clarinetists to help study better
playing techniques for fiercely competitive musicians who are often slow
to help themselves."

Apprarently one of the people involved is John Scott, a clarinet
professor in the College of Music at the University of North Texas in
Denton. The study is reported to be "...the first by researchers at the
Texas Center for Music & Medicine to look at the mechanics of instrument
playing."

Does anybody on the klarinet list know much else about this study? If
so, could you share more information about it with us?

Thanks,

Jim
