Just for the record, the little ditty is the end of the millennium's version
of a broadside ballad, popular from the 16th through the 19th century. They
were pasted on a wall (hence broadside), sold at fairs or in the streets,
and used the melody of a popular tune. Their subjects were about current
events, politics, crimes and the like. In many ways they served as the
newspaper of the illiterate class! As with the piece in question the author
was anonymous and usually preferred it that way.
