I second Roger's emotion here. In my experience, the small the horn, the
more important the quality of the instrument.

On tenor saxophone or bass clarinet, I get pretty much the same sound no
matter what instrument I play--with the same reed/mouthpiece, of
course--albeit with some intonation idiosyncrasies. (This assumes that they
seal up and are in good repair). On the little guy, however, entire
registers are out of tune on the less expensive horns--I consider an R-13 to
be a minimum purchase for an Eb that "works." I'd love to try the new
Patricola!

I understand Craig's point......and it is a fair one. However, the
desire to use the best possible tool doesn't go away because of one's
level of playing. In fact, the need for it increases. There are pieces
of music that require absolutely a top of the line instrument - the
difficulty of the work might include unusual voicings, pairings, dynamics
in intonationally challenged areas of the instrument - a student grade
instrument just would make it that much more difficult to play.
