I use a crystal bass clarinet mouthpiece (a Pomarico, as it happens) on a
Leblanc bass. The thing to watch is that you don't drop it, because if you
do, it's all over...... I do find that I get a buildup of scum on it more
quickly than I seem to on other mouthpieces (maybe it's just easier to see
:) ) but a little bit of vinegar on a cloth cleans it up really well - just
make sure you rinse it well with clean water. I use the ligature that I got
with it, which is just your ordinary two-screw metal ligature, and I've
never had any problems with the reed slipping or the mouthpiece getting
scratched. I think that crystal can be the way to go - certainly it suits
my bass and me very well, far better than the Otto Link I used to use.
