I suppose this shouldn't surprise me, as I attended Indiana University, an
even larger school. I was an older, master's degree student when I went
there, so I wasn't much affected by this mentality, but I saw how
undergraduates were treated and how they had to struggle. If an 18 year
old freshman at such a large school gets into any kind of trouble, no one
really cares. Such a person dropping out merely makes room for another
student the next year.

By contrast, at the school where I have been teaching for 32 years, at
some other excellent music schools, no music major *ever* is instructed by
a graduate assistant (TA). Sometimes our students don't appreciate the
fact that they receive all of their instruction from regular faculty
members.

Obviously, no school is the right one for every student, or for every type
of student. Still, after 32 years in higher education, I am often
mystified by the reasoning by high school students which goes into their
college choices.
