Subj: [kl] Oiling wood clarinets

When I lived in Philadelphia, I never oiled a clarinet. However, in
South Dakota, where the weather can be extreme, I've sometimes oiled it
when the dry weather made it necessary. Try using a dampit first, and if
the rings don't get loose, I wouldn't oil it. If the wood shrinks, and
the rings fall off, and it begins to look like an Eb, then I'd try
oiling it. (My mother must have told me at least a million times not to
exaggerate.) Seriously, when I first moved out here, I didn't oil my
clarinet, and during a particularly cold and dry winter, my clarinet
bore warped and became egg-shaped. I then changed my mind about oiling
(and got a different clarinet.) I know there is an extreme difference
of opinion on this, but my point is that you'll need to do different
things depending upon where you live.
