I ain't agona get into this again. Mark is well meaning but dead wrong.
Please check the archives to relive the fireworks over this topic. Also read
the article at http://www.iinet.net.au/~nickl/wood.html (thank Tony Pay for
the reference)which will give you the science behind why Mark is wrong (it
is directed at recorder players but the ideas are the same for any
woodwind).

François Kloc of Buffet maintains basically that it is unnecessary to
oil clarinets especially when they are brand new. This topic is of much
debate (just search the archives), but either way seems okay. Keep in
mind, one, not to oil it too much which can cause its own problems, and
two, sometimes if it will crack, it will crack whether or not you oil it.

For what it is worth i have never oiled my clarinet (now it is about 3
years old) and it is in fine condition. Others I know have which have
been oiled are in equally fine condition. Some which are not oiled have
cracked. Others that have been oiled also have cracked. Go figure. ;-)
