Being in college during the late sixties, I had a very liberal attitude
about touching - and a lot of things! But because of the problems that
liberality has caused in society we have tightened our mores. We must
deal with where we are now. Music is so personal to me that
"standoffishness" is somewhat abhorrent BUT I have to deal with it.
Imagine if we were instructing dancers - ballet especially.
A soft touch on the cheek while playing will point out *puffing* far
better than any verbal admonition (in my opinion at least) and I've been
known to have students feel my throat and jaw so they could tell how
tone production should be *under the skin*. Good thing I don't teach
regularly any more - I'm likely to labelled a pervert!
