Thank you for the clarification, David. To be honest, though, working in
the "real" world -- dealing with missed/rescheduled appointments,
contractors who take other jobs -- thus leaving us in the lurch -- etc.,
are good preparations for just such as you talk about, although the
weekly/biweekly/monthly nature of private teaching, changes the methods
somewhat... Nonetheless, its a *very* good point that needs to be
considered along with the disruption of students trapsing through your
house (or spending the time on the road going tere, and dealing with
who-knows-what), etc. etc.
As for your comment that those sorts of things are not covered in music
school, that is exactly my employer's lament regarding graduates from
architecture school. Now, this could develop into quite a thread, but just
what sorts of things should be covered regarding "real-world" issues in
college, where traditionally (and historically) the learning is on an
entirely different level, shunning the practical and delving into concepts,
philosophy, etc. (not very elegantly put, but you get my drift).
The same sort of thing can be applied to lower levels of education: just
how much of a school's curriculum can be devoted to learning English,
humanities, science, art, and so-on (you bet I include art(s)!!!!!), when
it seems that schools and parents are expected to be "parentis in absentia"?
