Ed,
The iMac was conceived as an "appliance" computer for networked installations
and centralized backups - especially schools (somehow I don't think I'm
going to see a lot of iMacs in major corporations - they're too cute).

The USB or Zip drive solution is reasonable - again, as I pointed out, a
relatively expensive solution since USB peripherals cost more than the
"cheap" cards and more than the "plug & pray" variety. The electonics on
a USB are similar to the electronics needed on a SCSI I device (basically
the driver is built into the appliance).
