I am An Eb afficionado. I have been playing the little thing for 21 years.
My first one was a Selmer Paris model that I found in a pawn shop. I was
happy with it until I joined a concert band and found that it just wasn't
adequate. At that time I bought an R-13 and have played on that until about
five weeks ago. Over the lat couple of years its pitch has begun to wander
and it has become increasingly difficult to play over the staff. Sooo, I
broke down and bought a new Patricola. It is a small wonder. It is very
free-blowing without the wild pitch problems of most free-blowing Eb's. The
break is almost non-existent. I can play all the way up to the G above the
staff without any problems. Best of all, it is in tune from end to end
without ANY odd fingerings. It is very light-weight and comfortable to
hold. It is made of rosewood and is exquisite to the touch and a sight to
see. I couldn't ask for anything nicer.

My experience has been this with the Eb clarinet: You get what you pay for,
for the most part. HOWEVER, if you happen to come across something that is
inexpensive and plays like a charm, then keep it and enjoy it for as long as
it lasts. Patricola is somewhat of an unknown in the clarinet world right
now. IMHO, a few years down the road people are going to discover these
instruments and the price is going to rise. I was impressed with them at
ClarinetFest and am even more so now, after having bought my own.
