What, they won't special order things like reeds for you?

A decision driven by costs and the market. You simply cannot afford to
stock multi-thousand dollar instruments in quantity when you sell one every
two years or so. Around here, buying a Selmer 100 or YCL-34 is considered
a big splurge. Believe me, the lack of such variety and quantity drives me
crazy every day at work, but I see how many people come into the store even
LOOKING for pro clarinets, much less with cash in hand. While I am
currently engaged in a personal crusade to broaden and deepen our
small-goods inventory (the boss doesn't see it my way yet, but I am making
progress), I have to admit that you can't tie up that much inventory money
in slow-moving instruments indefinitely. And then there are the people who
try it out in your store, then order it from the catalog, but we've been
over that ground already.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
