Tim,

I just went through a new Vito E-ffer about a month ago. Spring tensions
were very, very bad as it came from the factory. The flat springs they
use in them are very heavy gauge blued steel and some of them are also
very short. Getting them lightened up was a real challenge. Even when I
got them fairly even, they still felt kind of dumb in a few places.

If they could be redone with bronze phosphor springs, maybe they could
all be made to feel good. I think we're only talking the four side
jumper keys and the throat tone A key.

The instrument itself played great. I had to do very little, if anything
in the tuning and key height department. Tone hole burrs were minimal
and, while I did remove what little residue was there, I don't think
that there was enough to effect tone or tuning.

The tuning on the instrument was very good. Overall response was very
even.

Key work felt good under the fingers--very comfortable.

The mouthpiece, while not of super quality, was surprisingly good. If
you're going to do a lot of playing on it, you might want to invest in a
really good mouthpiece.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to get one. I felt that it was
an exceptionally fine playing clarinet for the money, a real bargin. It
would be more than adequate for all but the most demanding professional
playing gigs. In fact, an instrument like this would make a lot more
sense for the average or above average high school band because it
wouldn't go to hell sitting on the shelf those years when it either
isn't needed or there isn't a good enough player to toot on it.

Should you decide to pop for one, just remember that the spring tensions
will be so very bad when you get it, it will be almost impossible to
play, so count on spending maybe an extra $50 to get that part of it
running smoothly. If the repairman can get an addiquate assortment of
bronze phosphor springs to replace the steel flat springs, it might run
a bit more.

Good luck. Let us know how you like it if you get it.
