Quoth Tim Roberts:
"I picked up an *old* Bundy ebonite Eb clarinet at an estate sale a few years
ago. ...Because I am an amateur and don't play it continuously, I am hesitant to
spend
a great deal of money on a replacement. I am quite happy with the Vito Bb
clarinet I normally play, and I noticed that Woodwind & Brasswind sells brand
new Vito Eb clarinets for $450...... before I invest, I'd like to find out if there
are any particularly
violent opinions on the Vito Eb. Any takers?"
.
I have never played the Vito Eb, but I will say, the farther you get from the
standard horn, and the less often you play it, the more important the equipment.
Get the best damned Eb that you can afford, hock the car if you must. And be very
generous on a mouthpiece. And get Peter Hadlock's book on Eb clarinet excerpts, it
has a great section on fingerings.

And have fun. I love the Eb clarinet, I would rather play it than the Bb. You're
always a soloist, and you can really wail on it. Just don't work so hard to avoid
being flat, that you play sharp.
