Subj: [kl] Local stores

I can see that most of you have been fortunate enough to have had access to
large stores in your area. I have generally lived in more remote areas and
it simply isn't even possible to patronize local stores for all your musical
needs.

I happily have the local tech do my repair work (a very competent person).
But if I want to buy a mouthpiece, I must mail order for the ONLY ones they
carry are Selmer. When I decide to buy a new instrument, it will have to be
mail order as all they carry are Jupiters and Selmers (as many of you know,
I favor Leblancs). Shortly I will have to buy my sheet music by mail order
as I have just about got a copy of every clarinet piece that he carries.
Accessories like metronomes, swabs, etc I buy there as the price difference
compared to mail order isn't great and I have the added convenience of just
picking up what I need. I probably buy about half the family's reeds there
too just for convenience. However he only carries regular Vandorens,
Mitchell Luries, and regular Ricos. If you want something else, you are
right back to mail order. I cannot however buy my husband's sax reeds as he
prefers the Javas and they don't carry them.

There is another music store down the street. They are the authorized
dealer in this area for Leblanc. But you know what they have in the store?
Plenty of Vitos for the students. They have ONE Sonata (not several) to try
and none of Leblancs other models on hand.

So mail order is a necessary way of life for us in the more rural areas.
Actually we had been hurt by the demise of the mail order catalog that
occurred to the large number of people migrating to the city and being able
to just run out to a store and buy what they needed. A tradition of 100
years ago is being reborn in the guise of internet shopping replacing that
Sears and Roebuck catalog from which you used to be able to order anything
(cars to shoes and then some).
