Yes, both stores are closing.

Occasionally I find Performers Music OK, but not for facsimiles, and usable
editions of mid 19th century and before, which CF did always have (or an
empty manila folder that used to have). For the most part, Performers Music
has the usual stuff, encrusted with generations of unmarked editorial
changes, the type that make me go ballistic.

Turning to other posts on the same subject:

The problem with Internet music is that the vast majority of scores today
continue to be poorly edited (All editors who do not mark their editorial
changes as such should receive 2 yrs. without probation), and once you have
downloaded music (or purchased hard copies), it's yours. If you find it to
be a bad edition, your shoot out of luck. And I have very little faith that
downloadable Internet editions will be of better quality then the vast
majority of printed editions today. That is why I need to see the material
prior to purchase.

My only salvation is that I am again becoming involved with Northwestern U
and their Collegium Musicum (Mary Springfels director) and will have the
music library recourses at my disposal, but its not the same, and I would
NEVER think of photocopying anything.

As for supporting the small music stores, I do what I can, but around here
they mostly deal in rentals for the schools. For professional quality
instruments and especially service, places such as Evanston Band are where
you need to go (there are several other good ones in the area), but sheet
music at these stores is uhm, rather primitive, if there is any at all.

I too have had good luck finding things at Performer's Music. I seem to
remember there were some other small music shops in that building too, but
I'll sure miss Carl Fischer, empty folders and all! They have another one
dowtown. Is that closing too?
