I second and third Richard's post. I remember a very affecting ad in the
Instrumentalist some years back that pointed out that if you and all
your friends buy your new flutes from a mail-order place, don't be
surprised if there's no-one in reach to fix it the day before your recital
when a spring breaks, etc.

Interesting thread on the closure of music stores and the availability of
sheet music. I was shocked when I discovered that there is no music store in
the LA area with more than a token selection of classical music and that the
symphony here ends up mail ordering things from the very stores I used to
happily browse through in NYC!

BUT capitalism is all about shifting markets. As long as there is a demand
there will be a supply. In the not too distant future, all anyone will ever
need to do to get a piece of music is log on to a sheet music site, agree to
the price, pop some quality paper in the laser printer, and voila! Prices
will probably lower (including paper and printing) and selection will be
unlimited.

As for repairpeople, two things seem to be happening: 1) I can get advice on
how to do a simple emergency repair in fairly short order simply by posting to
this lovely newsgroup! That was not the case up until fairly recently. 2)
people who work with, refurbish and repair instruments as more or less of a
hobby used to be isolated from the general population. Now they can make
their presence known to numerous musicians in their area for no cost at all.
Even if my guy at the hornshop goes the way of the dinasaur, Trudy who lives
three miles away and works out of her den might be my savior. And she'll
probably charge me less!

Truly,
Don
