I assume that in most cases discussed thus far, teachers
are referring to younger students (early 20's and earlier)
when describing problems with payment. I've taught a num-
ber of students between 30 - 60 yrs of age, and have never
had a problem collecting my fee at the conclusion of each
lesson. In those rare instances where the student needed
to cancel (even at the last minute), I did not enforce a
payment in spite of the missed lesson. To my surprise, I
often found that the student had doubled my lesson fee at
the conclusion of their next lesson! It's a dream teaching
students like this. I guess I've been lucky. I did have
problems with younger students, but the older ones are typ-
ically more financially stable than I am, and are in tune
(no pun intended) with what my teaching activities repre-
sent to me.
