Johann Melchior Molter:
Historical Sets and Collected Editions is a reference resource that contains
scores for four concerti by Johann Melchior Molter for clarinet in D. The
forward is "Vorwart" in German, as are the contents. The concerti are #1 in
A Major, #2 in D Major, #3 in G Major, #4 in D Major. For my Masters recital
(a long few years ago) I transcribed #3 for Eb clarinet. After considering
the range, key and ornaments I decided to play the concert (on Eb clar) in
the key of D Maj, and transposed the orchestral parts to the key of F Maj: A
colleague, musicologist Dr. Joe Youngblook realised a continuo part. I had
never been closer than a size-comparison photo to a D clarinet, but at an
audition for I forget what orchestra, one person played the solo from Le
Sacre on a D clarinet: Neither of us got the job, but it still amuses me
that I remember that anecdote but not the name of the orchestra we tried out
for.
