Teaching privately is how I make my living. Meticulous preparation for that
first lesson helps in keeping the students paying on time, and saves a
teacher a lot of time juggling make-up lessons and keeping track of who
needs to pay for what. After 3 months of dealing with "My child came home
from school with a stomachache/headache/asthma attack/flu/sore tooth and
there's nothing we could do," I began to make it clear to the parents and
students that no future lessons would be reimbursed except for those missed
for funerals.

For someone with a soft heart it's tough enough anyway enforcing these
rules, but I have to remember that it's the only way I can afford to keep
teaching music and helping them the most.
