Yup - the days when you could touch anyone are gone - although I sometimes
forget and ask - and I've never had a problem with it - but it is wise to
use the no-gouch policy now.

Regarding payment, many people like the pay in advance. I have only used
it with one student - whose parents cancelled every other lesson due to
softball, volleyball, reschedule each week for a better time, cancel for
drama, etc etc etc. Since I only take 5-6 private students (beginners
through adult), I gave them the option of a different teacher or pay in
advance with the possiblity they will lose their weekly fee if they cancell
and no reschedule is possible. They chose this method and have (surprise
surprise) been extremely regular - but missed once (and still paid for it).
I try to scheudule a piano/clarinet solo rehearsal during one of these so
that the parent has no confusion about paying an accompanist AND me for a
specialized lesson - helps take up the slack.

The rest of my students bring a check each week. Of course, I'm not doing
it for the money - I'm doing it because I want to contribute to our
community's level of clarinet playing in the public schools. So far, no
problems - I have a waiting list of over ten!
