From: "Kevin Fay (LCA)" <kevinfay@-----.com> Subj: [kl] Apologies to Carl Schexnayder Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 14:11:47 -0500
In a post a few weeks ago, Carl noted that he spends a fair amount of time
getting students to migrate from plastic student horns to the intermediate
Leblanc models--specifically Normandies or Noblets. While I didn't put it
quite this way in my reply, at the time I thought he was a nut.
As luck would have it, however, I have just acquired a Noblet 45 in the key
of C, in order to play a Strauss wind serenade. They're on sale at the
Woodwind for $1299, and are the cheapest C you can currently buy. I had
them send me 3 with the expectation of sending 2 back.
These horns are GREAT. The intonation is pretty good--particularly in the
altissimo--but for the low A which is quite sharp. The fit and finish,
however, is superb; much better than most student horns. Other than a
couple of design things (like the straight Vito-style "jump" keys and the
interface on the left had pinky keys) I don't see that much of a difference
in the quality of construction from the "artist" horns. If a student can
get one of these in Bb for five or six hundred bucks, it's a steal.
I am a happy camper.
