Teri Herel advised teachers:

<<<Payment in advance with a clear cancellation/make-up policy cuts down on
cancellations significantly. And ironically this benefits the students
since when they show regularly, they will practice more.>>>

I supported my education habit by teaching kids privately. In addition to
Teri's tip on being paid for in advance--which is an absolute must, IMHO--I
would schedule 1 45 minute lesson per hour, on the hour. That way, if I
went 5 minutes over I wouldn't be stealing from the next kid (and could also
get a quick trip to the bathroom!).

The horror story--I had a young gal not show for a lesson. Having already
collected my money, I wasn't too steamed, but called her anyway to see what
was up. She told me--and given the nature of this girl, I think she
believed what she said--that she had practiced her music really hard and
knew it, so she figured she didn't have to come!
