Payment in advance with a clear cancellation/make-up policy cuts down on
cancellations significantly. And ironically this benefits the students since
when they show regularly, they will practice more.

Hate to say it, but many last minute cancellations are the parent's decision,
and hitting them in the checkbook (or the inconvenience of them having to
schedule a make-up lesson) takes care of most bogus cancellations (forgot, had
a soccar game, busy week, bad weather, etc.)

And interestingly, you don't have to be a jerk about it. I spell out a very
clear and fair policy and give it to my students at their first lesson. I'm
often thanked by the parents for it, and I rarely have a problem after.
