Subject: Starting a studio
Fellow Klarinetists,
I recently posted a message regarding my re-entry into the music world
(as more than a listener and singer, at any rate) and a proposed career
change from architecture to something computer related.
I also want to start a private studio, beginning slowly with one or two
students, and progressing as I feel able and as I can reduce my full-time
hours in my current work.
My question is, what resources are available (including any number of
you) to someone who wants to start private teaching, but is very concerned
with starting off on the right foot (for his sake, but primarily for the
sake of his students). I am reading what I have found so far or already
own (The Art of Clarinet Playing, Your Own Way in Music, The Art &
Technique of Performance, The Art of Practicing, and Making Money Teaching
Music), and I have yet to pay a visit to the university and public
libraries for more.
Any words of wisdom would be humbly and gratefully accepted.
Thanks!
-BK

A good word of wisdom would be to take lessons yourself with a leading
teacher in your area. That way, you will get suggestions as to the studio,
techniques, and another important one - if the teacher overloads, or if
students inquirer that are not the level of the other teacher - maybe you
will get some referrals. When I fill up, I send inquiring students to my
current students. Good experience for both.
Just remember that teaching Clarinet is not easy.
