Okay Ed, here goes.

Ryan I know what you are going through. I did all of that last year. As
far as the clarinet section at U of I goes.... I have a lot of faith in
it. There are a lot of really strong Juniors right now. That class
came in with about six really good clarinetists. There are some really
great leaders in the group-people I can look up to and follow. David Harris
(the clar. prof.) only took three freshman this year (me included.) Two
of us are in the top band and the other is principal in the second band.
(There are five bands.) Things can only get better now. Every year better
clarinetists will be coming in. Another thing to think about is that U of
I is mainly known for its GREAT music education program. Only a few of
these clarinetists are performance majors.

There are also a lot of playing opportunities here. I am currently
playing in a woodwind quintet, band, orchestra, and an orchestra
repretoire class-this is only the wind section of an orchestra, we played
Firebird a couple of weeks ago!!!.

These are a few of my observations since I have been here. U of I is
definately a school to look into. If you have anymore questions let me know.

As far as other schools. Northwestern has an excellent clarinet faculty.
Mallory Thompson, director of bands, is just awesome. I've heard that Ann
Arbor is good-but I really don't know much about it.
