Posts like this are what keeps me coming...thanks a bunch Jack for taking
the time to type all this in! One small correction: the piece Chalumeau
is by Canadian composer Harry Freedman (different spelling; his daughter
Lori is one of the leading contemporary clarinetists in Canada).

I heard the William Douglas piece Celebration II with Stoltzman and Tashi
here in Toronto when in high school; he played an unearthly altissimo note
at the end, and I was able to peer up at his stand at intermission and see
that it was a high A, but it had the focus and warmth of a chalumeau
tone...after the concert I found my way backstage, expecting there to be a
large line-up of well-wishers, but I was the only one, and Stoltzman
talked with me for 15 minutes, and signed my Mozart concerto! I saw the
pictures of his family on the inside of his clarinet case, and it said a
lot about the sacrfices he was making for his career. A great experience!
