If the only problem with the swab is the bare metal weight, try dipping it in
tool grip compound. Hardware stores sell several different brands. It's a
molasses-thick plastic in a can (like a small paint can). You dip whatever
you want to dip and let it dry for a few minutes. When dry, it's flexible
enough to bend a bit. You can re-dip as many times as necessary, if the first
coating isn't thick enough. On something like a swab weight that doesn't have
to take a lot of abuse, a coating will last a long time, so if you don't have
a can of this stuff at home, bum a dip from a neighbor with a well-stocked
workshop.
