"To play very quickly, and at the same time distinctly, is indeed a special
merit; as experience teaches, however, it may also cause great
errors.....Such people usually play everything that they encounter, whether
it is Presto, Allegro, or Allegretto, at the same speed. In doing this they
even believe that they are excelling others. Because of this excessive
speed, however, they... intermixed cantabile ideas..." J.J.Quantz 1752.

Who am I to criticize Sabine Meyer? But while the Allegro Moderato does
sound good, especially since we have all heard it so many times, it ain't
moderato and is done at that speed just to show off.

I think Ms. Meyer's embellishments are her own, and she usually does follow
the correct practice of always stating an idea plainly first. Her
articulation is not historically correct, but the performance does not
pretend to be a HIP one, and stands on its own merits.

I am not going to tread the minefield of ein gang again.

I recently heard Sabine Meyer's CD "Johann & Carl Stamitz." Her
embellishments in Concerto No. 3 in B flat were most interesting. ....
Also her tempo was faster (l32-6?) than traditionally played (l08-ll6) in
the first "Allegro Moderato" movement. Perhaps not appropriate, but I liked
it! ......
