Ed might closer to being on the right track than anyone else. I would
also add, try changing VERY SLIGHTLY the amount of opening of the
Bb/register key. Opening it a little more might clear up the tone
quality. Be aware though that the tuning of B natural and C over the
register break will also go sharper as the key is opened more. >>

There's also the technique of installing a cork pad on the register key that
is "tapered" to allow better air flow past the pad.

Or try this - just last week I was frustrated by this same problem. Not having
any cork available, I put in a pad made of synthetic material from Valentino.
The fuzzy sound of the B natural was greatly improved. I guess this is because
of the harder, smoother surface of the synthetic material.

I am in the process of replacing every pad on my bass clarinet with Valentino
pads. These pads really seem to be able to take away the "fuzzy" sound
inherent in many tones on the bass clarinet.

Has anybody else had the same experience???
