You can remove the pad and spring mechanism and take it to the local shop
and have it soaked in a chemical bath - or - do the chemical bath in a
large tub at home. The chemical bath will loosen and soften any dirt or
material that has hardened, sterilize the metal, and allow for some
aggressive scrubbing with a soft dish pad - a plastic or nylon scrubber
with dish soap.
