While we're trading Beecham stories...

My favorite - Beecham was conducting the Messiah, with a not too prepared
soprano soloist. He threatened to fire her if she did not learn her part
for the rehearsal on the following day. The next day the soprano
appeared, and announced "Sir Thomas, I've been up all night with the
Messiah".

To which Beecham replied, "Yes, and I'm sure your conception will be
immaculate!"
