Polyethylene glycol is usually safe for human consumption, as it is nontoxic
and nonabsorbable. In fact, they use it in cathartics (e.g., GoLYTELY or
Colyte) to clean out the bowel prior to examination or surgery, or to remove
certain poisons that have bee ingested. It is also the base that several
medications are dissolved in. I suppose one could develop an allergy to the
stuff, and large quantities taken orally can cause problems, but it should
be safe in the use you describe. As to using it as wood stabilizer, I have
no experience and will bow to others who do.

......I was interested that they mentioned impregnation not only with oils
but also with other chemicals. I've recently heard of soaking the wood for
several months in polyethylene glycol to stabilize it before use. This
treatment was mentioned in a woodworking book as well as a book on
instrument making- both mentions are brief and without detail. Has anyone
used this treatment or have any more information about the chemical and its
use or possible toxicity?
