Here are two links that those who suffer from occasional canker sores might
find useful.
what are canker sores:

how to treat:

I use over the counter phenol products since I have found that nothing seems
to heal my sores any faster than just leaving them alone. Phenol is an
effective local anesthetic on mucous membranes and I get enough relief from
ChamphoPhenique (sp?) to allow me to play for an hour or more. The stuff
tastes and smells vile but it works and it's cheap. Keep it off of your
toungue if you intend to play - a numb tongue will ruin your tounging
technique. I apply it directly to the canker sore with a q-tip and in about
a minute I am set for the next hour or so.
