I heard a horror story from a friend playing in "42nd Street" a little while
back; the pit they were playing in is expandable by swinging the back wall
up (it's suspended from the stage) and hooking it back. Well, one night the
crew forgot to attach the safety chains. It didn't fall during the show,
but managed to completely ruin a high-hat when the hydraulics gave out
during the middle of the night.
Also, for those who don't know the show "Sweet Charity", there's a scene
where Charity has to fall into the lake. In our production, Charity fell
into the pit and took off to get into a wet dress. Trouble was, she was
always in such a hurry she never watched where she stood. I very nearly had
a squashed bass clarinet on more than one occasion.
