OK, here's a link to a technical article by a recorder playing
(and busking) professor of chemistry and his wife. (They also train
dressage horses.)

I haven't read it in detail yet, but it looks very informative, even if
you *still* have to make up your own mind what to do. The woods he
discusses are mainly recorder woods, but there's a lot to learn about
the various oils available, and their behaviour.
