The mind/body relationship isn't very mysterious or complicated. Stress
(physical or mental) causes a reduction in the bodies ability to fight
infection. We don't understand why yet. Anything that reduces stress will
help the bodies own defenses to work. Drugs and other modalities alone
cannot cure a diseased body (AIDS patients die from infections that are
being treated in ways that would cure someone with a normal immune system).
Also, our immune system can cure many maladies without the use of drugs. In
some people, the use of otherwise useless drugs may reduce stress and
strengthen their immunity enough to cure them if they believe the drugs
work. The effect would be much greater if the drug actually was effective.
Many physicians are good at the treatment part, but are incompetent at what
used to be called bedside manner. If the physician spends time explaining
the natural history of the disease and the treatment to the patient, in a
friendly, hopeful manner, letting the patient know that he/she (the doctor)
will be available whenever the patient needs him, and will work with the
patient as a team, the outlook of the patient improves, with a dramatic
decrease in stress level. The combination of proper treatment and a
strengthened immune system can sometimes be just enough to deliver a cure.
It isn't going to cure aids, and it will not be enough for many maladies,
but it can bring about good outcomes for patients that otherwise may not
make it.

This is my last comment on the topic I will post to the list, as its
relationship to clarinets is tenuous at best.

....As for the mind/body relationship, sounds a lot like the Christian
Science doctrine to me....
