Some of standard medical treatment, especially that for which we do not have
a real cure, and even more of alternative medicine certainly works in the
way Neil describes. Sometimes I feel as if half of what I do is no more
effective than a "witch doctor", but it is effective nonetheless (I draw the
line at dancing naked under a full moon). But I still do not feel
comfortable with recommending such treatments as putting oatmeal or pickle
juice on cold sores as if they are real cures, nor do I think it's OK for
someone to suggest it as such to a cold sore sufferer on this list.
Acylcolvir really does do something, although not nearly what one would
like.
The relationship between mind and body is fascinating, and one of the flaws
of traditional medicine is that it tends to ignore it. Perhaps one day as we
understand more about the immune system and how to control it, this
relationship will be less important, but I doubt it. I could go on for days
about the philosophy and history of these concepts, but I'll spare everyone
the pain as it might just bring on a cold sore.

"Worthless" perhaps from a clinically provable standpoint, but even
conventional medicine will concede to the powers of the human mind
in its ability to affect the status of the body's immune response....
