Your ideas are mostly correct, but not the one about resistance. Sadly,
reports seem to indicate that resistant viral strains have developed with
the increased use of acyclovir in immunocompromised patients (AIDS and the
like). The CDC was doing a study to look into this (there is a description
of the study at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/focus/vol6no1/dvrd.htm) but other
than that they did find an increase in viral resistance, I don't remember
the details of the results.

Question to the doctor types:

The standard prescription I get for acyclovir tablets seems to be
"take for 3 (or 5) days", but without the stern warning given with
antibiotics to not stop early. Is it harmful to not finish
the prescription?....
