I suffered my first outbreak of oral herpes (yes, that's what it is)
in 7th grade or thereabouts. Thereafter, it recurred at intervals,
completely unpredictably, and I sought ways to diminish the pain, if
not actually make the sores go away. During a particularly bad out-
break, my mother suggested a non-prescription substance called Lysine,
in capsule form. This particular outbreak was quite bad, inside the
upper and lower lips, along the upper and lower gum lines. I took a
couple of these Lysine capsules before going to bed one evening. My
shock and surprise the next morning was beyond measure. The sores --
all of them -- were gone. I felt no pain whatsoever. It was as if
I had taken some kind of miracle drug. Unfortunately, this was a
one-time deal for me. Taking Lysine never had any effect on out-
breaks following the seemingly miraculous effect it had the first
time I took it.

If you've never taken Lysine, Kevin, you might look for it in the
health store and see if it does you any good. It might work only
once, but that's better than nothing. Beyond that, I find that the
sores occur most often during weeks when I've gotten poor sleep and
have eaten nutrition-poor food. I don't know if a pattern has been
clinically proven around outbreaks, however.
