The barrels that come with the mouthpiece, or "stock barrels" can be very
good, or they can inhibit your playing. I would suggest trying out a few
barrels on trial, that way you only have to pay for shipping and restocking if
you end up buying nothing. I play on a Pyne setup myself: pyne mouthpiece
and a newly purchased pyne barrel, which I find evens out the registers, makes
it a tad more free blowing, and warms up the sound tremendously. Other
popular barrels are the Chaddash and the Meonig. I have tried both and they
are both wonderful. It all depends on what your setup allows you to do. I
have also tried the M13 and the 5RV Lyre....have not had success with either,
but Vandoren has come out with a new mouthpiece...the M14, and a few of my
friends here at CCM play on it, and it seems to work for them. It also
depends on what kind of sound you are striving for....setup is
everything....once you find one that works for you, you are on your way to
fine clarinet playing...

Hope this helps,
