Message text written by Tom Ridenour:
>In my own finishing the subtle shapes of the curve at certain points,
points that measurements can't really be taken, make immense differences =
in
the playing. This is part of properly voicing the mouthpiece; and no
machine or mechanical proceedure is adequate for it, and it is an essenti=
al
operation; otherwise you may as well be making mouthpieces based on the I=

Ching.

I'd only disagree with the above part of Tom's very interesting post. I
could indeed design a metrology instrument that would measure anything
that any human could produce more precisely than they could make it, and
given a large budget, I could design a machine to reproduce it. As hinted=

before though, mouthpieces made in this way would make Tom's look
exceedingly cheap! And I would agree that any modification to the shape t=
o
adapt a mouthpiece to a particular clarinet or person is not yet possible=

because there is insufficient (public, at least) knowledge of the theory =
of
mouthpieces. This might happen one day, but till then, honour (and pay!)
the skilled artisans!
