In four non-consecutive issues of the medical journal called "Cutis,"
are four articles on medical problems in musicians. In part IV,
(Vol. 63, No. 1, Jan. 1999) which I have in front of me at the
moment, Alexander A. Fisher, MD, the author of many books and
articles on contact dermatitis and Clinical Professor of
Dermatology at New York University Medical School, presents on the
matter of dermatits in musicians in an article entitled
"Physiologic, Emotional, and Infectious Problems in Musicians."

It deals with issues of excessive sweating: hyperhidrosis. Fisher
states that the condition can be severely debilitating because it
interferes with the artist's ability to perform optimally. He
remarks on a pianist who switched to flute because of the problem
only to find out that her flute began to corrode because of the
condition.

Possible treatments are suggested.

Fisher also goes into a matter of great interest to many
clarinetists; i.e., abnormalities of saliva production including
xerostomia and hypersalivation. Infectious diseases brought about
by sharing of mouthpieces are also mentioned.
