Come to New Zealand, where the conductors realise that transposing stuff can
just be too hard - the music school where the youth orchestra is based has
two A clarinets (which works well, as I was lucky enough to get a reasonable
A clarinet secondhand four years ago, and one other player has just bought
one, as she's a performance student) specifically for the youth orchestra.
If we're not using them, then the next orchestra down can borrow them, but
we have priority. Mind you, we do have corporate sponsorship which allows us
to tour once a year as well as buy the A clarinets, a bass clarinet (which
is firmly in my possession!) and a marimba and other percussion gear. But I
think that we may be the exception rather than the rule, and we're just
lucky to have an understanding conductor who actually listens to his
Players' Committee (Do youth orchestras/bands in the States have Players'
Committees? We find that they work very well, both for the conductor and
the players).
