<<<Professional clarinetists DO join community bands.>>>

Yes, they certainly do. I play in a wind ensemble that is chock full of
"professionals"; we rehearse on Monday nights because that's when all the
"houses are dark." Some are teachers; others are pit musicians. A couple
are on-call with the Seattle Symphony. Our summer parks concerts have had
several SSO musicians play, just 'cuz Percy Grainger is so stinkin' fun.

Phil Smith is a pretty good trumpet player. His "normal" gig is playing
principal with the New York Philharmonic. Mondays, though, he plays cornet
with the Salvation Army (a gig he considers at least as important).

Now, there is no doubt that there isn't a consistent level of playing in
"community bands." Be careful of using that as a qualitative label,
though--"real" musicians like to play, too, which is why they do it in the
first place.
