Professional clarinetists DO join community bands. When I belonged to a local
community band several years ago, I sat next to a clarinetist from the RI
Philharmonic orchestra. "Frank" was transitioning out of the Philharmonic as
he neared retirement age. By day, Frank was a mechanical engineering professor
at the University of Rhode Island but he played in the Philharmonic since
forever, I think ;-)

Anyway, Frank has since retired from URI and the Philharmonic. He still picks
up paying gigs when he wants to, but he belongs to the community band, as
well. He is, in my opinion, the greatest thing that ever happened to the
clarinet section of that community band. All of us clarinetists benefitted
from his wonderful tone, playing facility, and professional demeanor.

Come to think of it, we also had a retired school band director on clarinet.
There were also a few professional trombone players in the band. And, I
suspect, there were a few "professionals in the making" in the community band,
as well, because it was open to promising young musicians from the junior and
senior high schools.
