Baermann and the Oscar Schubert edition.

I happen to have this edition, having bought it in Palestine. That was
all there was to buy at the time.
It was an extensive edition. I never got Book 1, the theoretical part
with charts. Instead my first teacher, Tzipine, gave me an old Langenus
edition, book 1, published by Carl Fischer. It omitted all the
explanations of the clarinet and the Baermann system. But the theoretical
part was the same.

I had book 2, which everyone knows. This book had the beginnings of
orchestral studies. What the orchestral parts were I don't remember,
except for one. There was an excerpt there from Fidelio by Beethoven. I
remember it was in 16ths and I always tried to play it fast ,not knowing
a thing about the opera, of course. I think that Professor Schubert
added the orchestral excerpts.

Then part three which was the scales etc. I don't think Schubert made
any changes at all, except for adding pages of chord studies at the end
of the book. But that is only to be found in this edition (Andre)

Then the accompaniment to book 2.

All this previous material was called the FIRST PART. Opus 63

The Second part, Opus 64. All that I see Schubert might have added
were some pages of staccato exercises at the end of each "Key" study
section in the Fourth book.
Next an accompaniment book for book 4.
Then a book with orchestral studies. I never had that.

The Fifth book was the one with concertos we know.

Next a book with, extensive for it's day, orchestral studies and then
another volume of bass clarinet orchestral excerpts. This is, most
likely, Schubert's addition.

This edition came out in 1919. The print was excellent. I am sure no
slurs or articulation were changed at all.

I faxed the Andres people asking them to send me information about what
they have of this book.

The closest to the original, I think, that any edition in the USA came
out with, was the Bettoney edition, with all the correct articulations
etc.

More of that later.
