Seeing the story about the band clarinetist from the Intelochen Academy
reminds me of when I was there. My first year there was a clarinetist who was
a presidential scholar in ARTS and also won the concerto competition from the
second or third chair in the orchestra. His name was Sean Osborn.

Another year there was a second clarinet player in the orchestra who won the
concerto competition and went to ARTS, but didn't get the presidential
scholarship (that year, both the first and second clarinetists in the
orchestra won the concerto competition).

You never know how those things are going to turn out. Some years, there are
just more talented students on one instrument than other years.
